Minutes from the 7 September 2017 Meeting

Minutes of the York RA Meeting
Held at York NHS Sports & Social Club
on 7 September 2017
with 19 members present

The Chair welcomed all to the meeting and the start of the new season, noting a number of apologies due to evening fixtures.

A minute’s silence was held in memory of Eddie Benson MBE, a long-time member and first recipient of the Chairman’s Award.

Members were made aware of the County RA games evening at Northallerton on Sunday 22nd October, and the visit of Neil Swarbrick, Premier League referee, to our next meeting on 5 October.

Membership stands at 25 at the start of the new season, with subs now due.

David King walked through 2017/8 Law updates with members.

Problem Corner: an issue was raised where a referee had abandoned a game due to a tackle resulting in a broken leg. There was a chance that assault charges would be brought against the offending player; the referee was advise to direct any contact towards the County FA and to use the national RA for support as required.

Conor Ledgeway, Liam Powell and Conan Dunne then gave a great presentation describing their experiences officiating at the Iber Cup in Portugal, representing the North Riding FA.

There being no further business the meeting closed at 9:10pm.

Next meeting – 5 October sees Neil Swarbrick, PGMO Referee, as the guest; need to publicise this event.

Problem corner, there was some discussion regarding referees being involved in a court case involving a tackle in the game (J Ham). David King raised some of the new Law changes, specifically the penalty kick and sanctions; recommended that members read the Law changes and particularly Law 12.

Conor Ledgeway, Liam Powell and Conan Dunne, presented their experiences from their trip to Portugal in July (Ibercup). They talked about preparation for the tournament, expectations and challenges. Mentioned games they officiated in and the challenges faced (heat, language barrier, etc.) Enjoyed the trip and are better referees as a result. David King (Observer) who attended congratulated the guys on their efforts in Portugal and this evening.

This event will have its door open at 7pm with a hot buffet being available at the cost of £35 per head. On the night there will also be the chance to win shirts signed by the man himself by the clubs he played for.

The second event is an update regarding the 5-a-side football tournament. The date was originally on 22nd July but the football club has informed us they have taken a booking on this day for a wedding and we have been forced to move the date back a day to Sunday 23rd July. To the teams that have already contacted me could you let me know if this date would still suit you and hopefully will hear from more teams in the next few days being able to enter a team.
